  Coming Changes
Posted by: DiscjockeyDale - 02-18-2018, 04:55 AM - Forum: Site News - No Replies

I'm initiating a couple of projects as per suggestions from a couple of our members.
I'm going to attempt to combine and share the "Off Topic" section with three sister sites...
Since most of the "Off Topic" content is the same across all four of our three-wheeler EV sites.

When finished, the "Off Topic" section will be independently hosted and shared across all four sites.
Since we want it to be the same format as the existing sites, it'll have to be in the form of a Mybb forum.
That simply means that you'll have to do a one-time registration and be logged in to participate in the section.

Members will be able to post, start threads and reply elsewhere on site  without registering and logging into "Off Topic".

Guests will still be able to view that section and members will have a seamless experience if they stay logged into that section.
So not much will change. The benefit should be members of multiple sites not having to keep track of duplicate threads on all sites.
That and there will be more people (from the four sites) participating in one thread instead of theoretically ~1/4 that many on each site.

Keep in mind that this is just for the "Off Topic" section. The one-time registering and login for that section is necessary for anti-spam and security.

******************************************************************************************************************

The other "change", if you will, is that I'll be starting some posts with some hopefully interesting questions.
I'd like everyone to take a look and please share your thoughts and experiences with all of us.
I also encourage you to start some similar threads and polls of your own.

I almost forgot. Call this number three. I'll be building the Sondors Forum (http://SondorsMap.com) out to a full fledged resource sometime soon.
I just recently installed and configured even more anti-spam measures here. A few will always take the time and effort to get through. But so far so good.

  My Solo
Posted by: Leona - 02-15-2018, 10:35 PM - Forum: Delivered Solos - No Replies

I haven't posted for awhile so thought it was time.  Today is the seven month anniversary of getting our Solo (my son and I) and I must say that I love it as much today as I did the day we received it.  I just love driving it.  We use it for a delivery vehicle at our restaurant and catering business.  It made six deliveries today.  One was to the open house at Electra Meccanica.  I love it that they use us as their caterer.  I'm not sure if they like the food or if they just like seeing it delivered in their creation. I am so looking forward to the day when everyone gets their car.  I would love to meet up with other owners and go on a drive together.  What a sight that would be!  The attention this little car gets is crazy. We keep it parked in front of the restaurant during the day and no less than 20 people a day stop and take a picture of it.  And some of them come in to eat which is an added bonus.  Also, the pictures they take are good advertising for us as our name is on the car and I am sure a lot of the pictures get posted to social media. I would also like to mention how good everyone at Electra Meccanica has treated us.  Jerry comes in when he is in the neighbourhood.  Often he gets here early and takes all the chairs down for me.  We are quite close to their shop so a lot of their team come here for lunch.  If anyone has any questions for me I would be happy to answer them.  Nothing too technical though.  I really don't know how it all works.  I just know that it does!

  New Thread Ideas for Owners
Posted by: Zalf - 02-15-2018, 10:06 PM - Forum: General Solo Discussion - Replies (5)

With delivery of our Solos just around the corner it's time to start thinking of new threads and how to organize them so everything doesn't get bunched up in the General Discussion thread. This is the first forum that I have ever participated in (I've looked through many though) so please excuse any overly retarded ideas.

How about starting with the title Delivered Solos and sub-threads(?) inside there : Delivery DateFirst Impressions, Delivery Fees to your Location, Mileage on One Charge, Glitches and Fixes, Owner Modifications, Warranty Issues, Reactions from the Public, Photos of your Solo in Exotic (picturesque) Locations, Solo Cruise Night Locations, etc etc

You could bunch up a few of the underused threads together to make more room, for example: new thread Solo Spin-offs to incorporate the Tofino and Super Solo.

What sub-thread ideas do you "Soloowners-to-be" have? Reply Please!

  Bread Crumbs
Posted by: pogson - 02-14-2018, 01:35 PM - Forum: General Solo Discussion - Replies (1)

Being retired, having time on my hands, and a construction crew having piled tons of earth on the road to the mail-box, I decided to review the status of EMV on the Internet...

Here is where the bread crumbs lead me.

On *.dot.gov the only solid reference I find to EMV/Solo is a letter filed by EMV about the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). That letter is dated August 24, 2017.
"Electra Meccanica Vehicles Corporation is currently manufacturing a 3-wheel all-€electric vehicle, and is assigned WMI 2E9********080*** by the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association."

The fields in the VIN also reveal that EMV is classed as a low-volume (<1000 units) manufacturer. We know why...

The CVMA states it issues a WMI upon satisfaction of Canadian safety requirements including issuance of a NSM (National Safety Mark).
"After compliance with the Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, Transport Canada will issue the manufacturer a National Safety Mark (NSM) and will at that time authorize the CVMA to issue a World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) code."

The letter also contains some obsolete specs: "8.64 kWh". I guess that's consistent with prototype(s) shipped to USA for display/testing.

So, I'm puzzled. Either EMV does or does not have safety certification. The existence of a VIN valid for admission to USA suggests it does. However, Canada's database of NSMs shows nothing for EMV/Solo.

Canada says, "The time it takes to process a NSM application depends on the quality of the application provided. The entire review process takes four to six weeks once we receive all of the information we requested." Some details on the process are here.

Can Leona or some other person in sight of Solo look for a NSM? It should look like this[Image: faq_e.1.jpg], with the 000 in the centre being a unique alphanumeric code for the manufacturer. It's normally in the edge of the door-opening.

  Leasing/buying a used LEAF?

I've made that point on more than one occasion on this site. Nissan is inadvertently broadening the field - with a deluge of lease returns from customers. I can wait (for some indeterminate amount of time) and buy a Solo for about US$15,000 - maybe, some day - OR I can go out tomorrow (literally tomorrow) and pay about US$7500 (or less) for a 3-year-old, low-mileage, used LEAF that seats 4 and will go 80+ miles of freeway driving. No, that LEAF won't have the "neat cachet" of the Solo. No, the LEAF won't get as good "mileage" (miles per kWh). I have basically resigned myself to the idea that I will be buying a used LEAF in about 12 months - no company has instilled the slightest amount of confidence in *me* that they will be able to provide a dependable, 1-or-2-seater EV to *me* in that timeframe.

I will maybe end up buying a Solo or SRK in 2021 (or later) - if they ever ship. I would have gladly forked over $15000 in Feb 2017 for a Solo - if I could have gotten one. As it stands, EMV must convince me that they will actually deliver these things long before I spend a second looking at one. So now they have to ship, in quantity, over a multiple-quarter period before I would even consider test-driving one. That's how badly Kroll has f'd up. And I'm telling the same thing to everybody when the subject of small EVs comes up (Sonders, or whatever) - I'm not holding my breath for a Solo, and I'll very likely end up buying something else. I've talked multiple people out of considering a Solo over the past 3 months. (None of them really cared about an enclosed 3-wheeler - they want a small, efficient EV just like I do.) Kroll is continuing to make it easy for me to talk people out of the Solo - "ha! look what he said this month" or "the story has changed yet again - and still no tangible product".
Spark, curious if you have calculated the cost of leasing a new Leaf as an option to buying used?  Does the cost of fuel savings offset the cost of the lease payment enough to make leasing a viable option?

1) There aren't any new LEAFs available for lease. (Nissan just released their "overhaul" of the LEAF, it does 150-160 miles now, and NONE are currently available - that will change in the months to come.) I refer to LEAF1 (the model sold since 2011 or so) and the LEAF2 (new model in 2018). I specifically mention the LEAF, as there are many of them available, and 10s of thousands will be coming off-lease this year and next. There is already a glut, it will get worse, and they are REALLY inexpensive.

2) I think that the (used) LEAF1 is a better compare to the Solo than the (new) LEAF2: '1' has slightly less range than the Solo, compared to a LOT more range than the Solo for the '2'. Although the LEAF2 is much closer to the Solo in one category : you can't get one in the U.S. yet! Wink

3) Based on previous lease conditions, I would *expect* the monthly cost of a LEAF lease to be in the $200-300 range. So, $2500/yr and over. I can BUY a car for $7500, *OR* I can pay $7500 in payments (then give the car back after 3 years). I really don't see why I would lease under those conditions.

I am *currently* leasing an EV (a Spark EV) - but I had stumbled across a FANTASTIC deal : $89/mo. I got the ONE vehicle at that price. Adding everything up (down payment, mo cost, deducting CA rebate, PG&E {utility} rebate, ...) the car costs me about $30/mo. I am driving a NEW vehicle for less than I paid in gas costs bi-weekly with my previous vehicle. I also get a LOT of my electricity for free (more than 3/4, in fact). So, for me, it was a no-brainer. But I'm going to have to return it next year (2019).

  Hi from TX

Hi, I'm Ed K from near Austin TX (work in Austin, but live in Pflugerville).
I have a 2014 Volt, bought new, and my wife has a 2017 Bolt.  Both are great cars.  We also had a 2015 C-Max Energi for 2 yrs.

I've been watching EMV since early last year, but what really got my interest was the Tofino.  I visited the Vancouver offices in November to meet some of the guys and see the Solo.  I expect that Solo must be a success if I ever want to see a Tofino in my driveway.  So I've tried to dig into the Solo specs/claims to understand better what EMVs capabilities are.  They certainly have some challenges.

I'm active on the GM-Volt.com forum (also as edk-austin), and the Facebook Chevy Volt Owners and Chevy Bolt-EV Owners groups.
